What is Fashion?
Fashion is an art of identifying fashionably peculiar aspects of bodily activity and self-affirmation at a given time and place and at a given context. The word simply means a style defined by the fashion industry which is what is commonly called fashion. Today’s fashion lingo may include all the myriad definitions of the word “fashion”, but they all have to do with the specific way in which certain things are put together. Fashion designers are responsible for defining the culture and language of the fashion world. They must take into account what is current in the public consciousness and what is more significant to the consumer.
The fashion industry is heavily involved in influencing social norms through the creation of new dress codes and opinions, such as what is considered to be desirable and what is considered to be demeaning. They also decide what is appropriate for the marketplace and what is considered to be in fashion. For instance, the wearing of revealing clothing in high fashion may become unacceptable if it is caught on television.
Because designers are in competition with each other, the designs they come up with often reflect the cultural and social currents of their times. As women and men dress more freely in the open air, they also experiment with dressing in various ways, both to impress others and to make a statement about who they are. A designer may take an entire collection from start to finish, developing it and making changes as necessary, creating a unique and individual fashion style. Today’s fashion designers are very concerned about being thought of as being up-to-date, so they create styles that will be accepted as trendsetters in their particular areas of operation.
