Today’s travel is made possible by the development of new means of transport, such as by airplanes, ships and automobiles, which enable people to travel across great distances in a short period of time. Air travel is probably the best known type of travel, but also involves rail and road transport as well. Tourism has become an important segment of the global economy, and when tourists travel into a particular country, they let the government promote tourism by building hotels, resorts, parks and other facilities. In turn, when tourists are travelling from another country to visit that country, they let the government promote tourism, so that they can let people see things they would not otherwise be able to see if they were travelling by car or by bus.

The tourism industry generates employment for many people, both native and foreign, which results in a significant contribution to the national economy. As a result of the large numbers of tourists who come to a given area, the local people have a much more varied and diverse set of experiences than they would otherwise have. This allows the different cultures and lifestyles of the people in those areas to be representing, allowing everyone to have more varied and interesting experiences. As well as the development of tourism infrastructure, there has been considerable development in the field of tourism management, resulting in increased knowledge about how people travel, which increases understanding of the tourism industry, and promotes greater development.
