The Future of Sports Betting in America

Many states have legalized sports betting, but not all have made it easy for newbies. There’s a learning curve for most new players, but there are some resources available to help you get started. In particular, odds are a crucial area to master. Using odds to predict the outcome of a game is a critical part of understanding the game. If you can pick the team that has the best odds, you’ll have a better chance of winning.

While PASPA, the federal ban on sports betting, was found unconstitutional in 2002 on Tenth Amendment grounds, sports betting remains a controversial topic. During lame duck season, former Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch introduced the Sports Wagering Market Integrity Act of 2018, which would have created a clearinghouse for state sports betting markets and established federal standards for these markets. Unfortunately, this bill had no legs, and its significance is purely symbolic. In the fall of 2018, a House Judiciomber subcommittee held a hearing on the future of sports betting in America.

Some sports betting scandals have undermined the integrity of major sporting events. These include bad calls by officials, point shaving, and overall match fixing. One famous example is the 1919 World Series, where MLB pitcher Pete Rose admitted to illegal gambling. NBA referee Tim Donaghy admitted to illegal gambling in a video game. Both of these cases highlight the need for greater transparency in the sports betting industry. And, if the sportsbook is legitimate, it will be backed by the government of every state.
