Problem Gambling Addiction

The word “gambling” comes from the Latin word which means “to strive.” Gambling as a sport has been around for hundreds of years and it was probably first used as a way to make money by gambling with other people’s money. Gambling has evolved over time to become a form of wagering money as well as a form of business. In both ways it is very similar to other forms of gambling but differs in the fact that there is usually a prize or some kind of return prize involved in the game, like jackpot games or slot machines.

The problem of gambling addiction has been gaining a lot of media attention over the past several years, mainly because of the many celebrities that are suffering from some form of gambling or addiction problem. Gambling is a problem with many different sub-types such as internet or online gambling, offline gambling such as bingo, card games like poker, slots, and blackjack, and video games such as video poker and roulette. Gambling is also the most common form of addictions in the United States and is the most popular of all types of addictions, because it allows people to escape certain societal problems like stress, unemployment, and boredom.

People who gamble are not necessarily thinking about losing money. Most of the time, people gamble because they have some need to escape from a certain situation or feeling of discomfort. With that being said, a problem gambler will do anything it takes to win and will go to great lengths to do so. Many people gamble because they have financial obligations that are coming due or they need to make a large purchase such as a house or car. Many times, people who gamble are just bored and looking for ways to pass the time during the day. It is estimated that there are over 5 billion dollars lost by American citizens each year because of gambling activities.
