A Healthy Diet: Eating the Right Food to Support Your Health

Food is any material consumed to supply nutrition to an organism for the purpose of sustaining life. The word food brings with it the idea of food, a means of nourishment, a means of sustenance, a source of life, a means of existence. Food is generally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and has necessary nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, and fats, or mineral constituents that contribute to health.

The five main groups of food are carbohydrates, proteins, vegetables, fruits, and fats. Plants only provide carbohydrates by way of sugars. Fruits and vegetables are generally low in calories but high in nutritional value. In general, a healthy diet consists of a combination of all five groups of food.

Many people believe that junk food is the key to an unhealthy and slow-moving metabolism. The truth is that unprocessed foods contain the same amount of calories as fresh food, yet contain none of the fiber and other valuable nutrients normally found in whole foods. Unprocessed foods are loaded with preservatives and chemicals that destroy essential nutrients and lead to weight gain, clogged arteries, and even cancer. Processed foods are rarely eaten on their own, so they stay slim and often have less than desirable taste. It is better to eat a wide variety of whole foods to ensure that you get all the nutrients your body needs. To lose weight, eat unprocessed foods until they are in the refrigerator and use frozen or canned goods sparingly.
